SUMMARY:Caring for Trees Throughout their Life Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Planting trees is important\, but so is looking after our existing urban forest. Just like people\, trees at various stages of life have different needs. Depending on their age there are many different things we can do to help our trees thrive. \nThe City of Guelph’s urban forest is made up of trees from streets\, parks and natural areas most of which grow on private land. Private land also offers the greatest opportunity to plant more trees to grow the city’s tree canopy. \nThe importance of a healthy urban forest has never been more evident than with the growing occurrences of wildfires and flooded basements due to climate change. Trees in our cities help to improve air quality\, reduce flooding\, keep our cities cool\, provide essential habitat and food sources for many types of wildlife and contribute to making our neighbourhoods great places to live. As much as trees help us to adapt to climate change\, they are equally dependent upon us to ensure that they can grow and thrive. \nLearn about some practical ways to care for trees at different stages of their life cycle: \nThe role of trees in our modern cities \n\nCritical infrastructure\nTree canopy\n\nBest practices for tree care \n\nEstablishing new trees\nJuvenile\nMature\nSenescence\n\nLocal Action \n\nGuelph Urban Forest Friends\nGuelph Tree Trust – caring for our legacy trees\n\nCaring for legacy trees: Guelph Urban Forest Friends & Guelph Tree Trust \n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\nAdele Pierre\, Landscape Architect and ISA Certified Arborist \nLandscape architect and ISA arborist\, Adele Pierre leads an award winning design firm specializing in the creation of beautiful\, low maintenance landscapes. Mindful of the effects of climate change on our natural systems\, Adele incorporates native plantings in all projects to provide habitat for pollinators\, build healthy soils and manage rainwater. Along with her husband\, a musician and woodworker\, she enjoys country life on 2 acres in Haldimand County with a large vegetable garden\, laying hens\, honey bees and an extensive collection of native flowering shrubs and perennials to feed the bees. Their honey\, mead and honey beer are spectacular. \n\nto register: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/caring-for-trees-throughout-their-life-cycle-tickets-687500431297?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl \n

SUMMARY:Hanlon Creek Forest - Planting Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us in planting a new forest in Guelph on Earth Day\n Parking\, Site Access\, and Environmental Fair at 335 Laird Road \nPlant trees and enjoy the environmental fair with a variety of booths\, entertainment\, and food.\nTrees\, shovels\, mulch\, pails\, and planting instruction provided.\nWear boots and gloves for your comfort.\nEach tree you plant will sequester 1 ton of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old.\nThis site will take 4 years to plant and could become part of a future pollinator flyway. \nTrees such as native oaks\, sugar maples\, and shrubs like serviceberries are popular with pollinators and are well suited to restoring our natural heritage system.  This new forest will help clean our air and water\, and become a home for nesting birds and other animals. When the forest becomes mature\, it will sequester approximately 6\,000 tons of carbon every year.  The trees we plant will benefit generations to come – including the sugar maples that can be tapped and enjoyed b

SUMMARY:National Forest Week: An Old-Growth Forest Project Tour and Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:A 2-3 hour tour through the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest Project\, including reflections on past and present restoration activities. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nForests and other natural spaces are necessary for human health and wellbeing as well as providing habitat and food for all our non-human neighbours. The Ignatius Old-Growth Forest Project has been actively pursuing forest and riparian restoration activities since 2014\, but the work began long before the Project’s official launch as the “Plant an Old-Growth Forest Project.” Join us on Sunday\, September 18th as we kick off National Forest Week with a walk through the Project grounds and a retrospective on its history. We will talk about the dam removal that paved the way in 2009; community collaboration and engagement; past and ongoing restoration activities to improve connectivity and manage invasive species; and adaptive management strategies. \nThis conversation and guided tour is free and open to everyone\, though donations are gratefully accepted online at https://ignatiusguelph.ca/donate/ or on-site through the donation boxes. \nWe will meet at the Pavilion near the entrance at 53 Cross Creek Boulevard at 10am. Please dress for the weather and bring a hat\, sunscreen\, water\, and bug spray as needed. \nWe do have a cap on the number of attendees to ensure parking will be available. If there is enough interest\, we may offer a second session.
